Kurgan modeline göre M.Ö 4000-1000 arası Hint avrupa göçleri.The magenta area corresponds to the assumed Urheimat (Samara culture, Sredny Stog culture). The red area corresponds to the area which may have been settled by Indo-European-speaking peoples up to ca. 2500 BC, and the orange area by 1000 BC.

Kurgan hipotezi (teorisi) erken Hint-Avrupa kökenlerinin, arkeolojik "Kurgan kültürü" ne dayandığını öne süren teorilerden biridir. Kurgan türkçe "korugan" sözcüğünden türetilmiş höyük mezar anlamına gelen bir terimdir.

Kurgan modeli Hint-Avrupa kavimlerinin kökenleri ile ilgili olarak en fazla kabul görmüş olan önermedir. Kurgan çözümlemesi oldukça ilgi çekici ve birçok arkeolog ve dil bilimci tarafından tamamen ya da kısmen kabul görmüş bir çözümlemedir.

Kurgan hipotezi ilk olarak 1950'li yıllarda Marija Gimbutas tarafından kurgulanmıştır. Gimbutas "Kurgan kültürü" nü birbirini takip eden dört periyodun bileşkesi olarak tanımıştır.
