Adaylar Akademi Üyelerinin Yönetmenler branşı tarafından seçilir. Kazananın seçimi için ise tüm Akademi Üyeleri seçime katılabilir Geçmiş 79 yılda paylaşılan ya da aynı yönetmene verilen ödüller ile birlikte AMPAS 81 En İyi Yönetmen Oscarı'nı 59 farklı yönetmene verdi.

Sadece dört kadın yönetmen bu ödüle aday oldu. (Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola], Lina Wertmüller ve Kathryn Bigelow) sadece Kathryn Bigelow, Hurt Locker (Ölümcül Tuzak) filmiyle kazandı.
