Matthew Robert Smith (d. 28 Ekim 1982)[2], İngiliz bir tiyatro ve dizi oyuncusudur. Doctor Who'da 'On birinci Doktor'u oynayarak adından söz ettiren aktör, 2011 yılında BAFTA Ödülü'ne aday gösterilmiştir.[3]
İlk başlarda profesyonel futbolcu olmak isteyen Smith, belinden geçirdiği bir sakatlık yüzünden sporu bıraktı. Ulusal Gençlik Tiyatrosu'na katıldıktan sonra East Anglia Üniversitesi'nde Drama ve Yaratıcı Yazarlık okuyan sanatçı,[4] Londra tiyatrolarında Murder in the Cathedral, Fresh Kills, The History Boys ve On the Shore of the Wide World gibi oyunlarda yer alarak 2003 yılında aktörlüğe adım attı. Repertuarını West End tiyatrosuna kadar genişleten Smith, Christian Slater ile birlikte[5] Swimming with Sharks adlı filmin tiyatro uyarlamasını oynadı. Bunu bir yıl sonra eleştirmenlerce çok beğenilen That Face oyunundaki Henry karakteri takip etti.[6]
Doctor Who'da oynamadan önce ilk televizyon rolünü, Jim Taylor olarak Philip Pullman'ın The Ruby in the Smoke ve The Shadow in the North kitaplarının BBC uyarlamalarında kapan oyuncu, ilk baş rol oyunculuğu deneyimini Danny olarak eski bir BBC televizyon dizisi olan Party Animals'da yaşadı. Ocak 2009'da 'On birinci Doktor' olacağı açıklanan Smith, bu dizide Doktor'u oynayacak en genç kişi oldu.[7][8] Aktör, 2011 yılında Christopher Isherwood rolünde bir BBC televizyon filmi Christopher and His Kind'da oynadı. En son olarak 2012 yılında Bert Bushnell rolünde Bert and Dickie isimli filmde göründü.

Kariyer Öncesi ve Eğitimi [değiştir]
Smith, Northampton'da doğmuş ve büyümüştür. İkinci derecede kapsamlı bir okul olan Northampton School For Boys' da okumuştur. Profesyonel bir futbol oyuncusu olmak istemiştir, önceden Northampton Town F.C., Nottingham Forest F.C. ve Leicester City F.C.[9] gibi gençlik takımlarında oynamıştır. Ciddi bir bel sakatlığından sonra, drama öğretmeni onu gizlice Twelve Angry Man uyarlamasına onuncu jüri üyesi olarak yazdırmıştır. [10] Oyundaki bölümü aldı, fakat öğretmeninin onu yazdırdığı drama festivaline gitmeyi reddetti.[11] Drama öğretmeni ısrar etti ve sonunda Matt'i Londra'daki National Youthe Theatre'a katılmaya ikna etti.
Okulu bitirince, Smith East Anglia Üniversitesi'nde Drama ve Yaratıcı Yazarlık bölümünde okudu.[12] Favori müzik grubunun Radiohead olduğunu söylemiştir.
Özel Hayatı [değiştir]
Smith, Billie Piper ve Mayana Moura ile kısa süreli ilişkiler yaşamıştır. Daisy Lowe ile 18 ay ilişki yaşamış ve Kasım 2011'de ayrılmışlardır. Matt bir ateisttir.[13] Ayrıca çok büyük bir Blackburn Rovers taraftarıdır.
