Engizisyon (Latince:inquisitio, soruşturma), Katolik Kilisesine bağlı bir mahkeme sistemi idi. Gerek kararları, gerek siyası ve dini erki nedeniyle üç büyük engizisyon adından çok söz ettirdi.

Orta Çağ Engizisyonu, Valdensesler ile Katharlar'ın kurulu düzeni sarsan öğretiler yaymaya başlamaları üzerine, 1231'de Papa IX. Gregorius tarafından kuruldu.Engisizyon Mahkemesi'nde mahkûm suçunu kabûl edene kadar işkence görürdü.Eğer suçunu kabul etmez ise işkenceden ölürdü, kabûl ettiğinde de zâten hapisanede ömür boyu ceza çekerdi.Yâni kısacası, neresinden bakılırsa bakılsın, Engizisyona düşen bir kişi ölü idi.

İspanyol Engizisyonu ise, Castilla kraliçesi I. Isabella'nın ısrarı üzerine, Papa IV. Sixtus tarafından 1483 yılında onaylandı. Müslümanlar'la Yahudiler'in kendi inançlarına bağlanmalarını sağlamak hedeflenmişti. Bu nedenle, 200.000'e yakın Yahudi, 1492 yılında İspanya'yı terk etti.

Roma Engizisyonu, Roma Katolik Kilisesi'nin savunduğu öğretiyi korumak için Papa III. Paulus tarafından 1542'de kuruldu. Genel olarak Calvin ve Lutherciler'e savaş açtı. Roma Engizisyonu, cadılık ve büyücülükle de uzun yıllar mücadele etti. Bir manastıra ya da piskoposun sarayına yerleşen engizisyon sorgucusu, daha sonra halkı kilisede toplayıp uzun bir vaaz veriyordu. Amaç, yerel halkla ilişkileri sıcaklaştırmak ve onların güvenini kazanmaktı.
