Klinik depresyon, kişinin sosyal işlevlerini ve günlük yaşama dair etkinliklerini rahatsız edecek, bozacak dereceye ulaşmış üzüntü, melankoli veya keder durumudur.

Kişinin ilişki ve etkinliklerini etkilemeyen, üzgün olma durumu ve kişinin moralinin bozukluğu çoğu zaman depresyon olarak anılır. Fakat klinik depresyon tıbbi bir teşhistir ve günlük kullanımdaki depresif olma durumundan çok daha farklıdır. Bir çok insan depresif olma hissini "hiç bir neden olmadan üzgün hissetme" ya da "hiç bir şey yapmak için motivasyonu olmama" olarak tanımlar. depresif kişi kendisini yorgun, üzgün, tembel, sinirli, motivasyonsuz ve apatik hissedebilir. klinik depresyon genellikle normal deprese hislerden daha ciddidir.
