Charlotte Buhler born in Austria on December 20, 1893 and passed away in 1975. She was a German developmental psychologist and psychotherapist. She's known for her contributions to the field of personality psychology and humanistic psychology.


Life

Buhler's father was an architect and her mom was a musician. Buhler had a great curiosity from her younger life in psychological processes. In her high school years she formed an original study of human thought processes that foreshadowed her doctoral research. [1]

Buhler got married in 1916 to Karl Buhler, and in 1917 she gave birth to her daughter, Ingeborg. She also had a son, Rolf in 1919.

From 1920 to 1922 Buhler provided help to the Prussian government and school board with a project related to adolescents, while also lecturing in Dresden at the Technische Hochschule.

Buhler lived in Vienna from 1923 to 1938, during which time she primarily worked out of The Vienna Psychological Institute. This research center was focused on applying psychology to real-world problems. While there, Buhler's research centered on the practical applications of psychological development from infancy to adolescence. In addition to her work in Vienna, she also taught, traveled, and consulted in different parts of Europe and the United States.[2]

Buhler received her doctorate in philosophy from the University of Vienna in 1920, where she worked as an assistant in the psychological clinic. She became interested in personality psychology and psychoanalysis during this time.

In 1923, Buhler became the director of the Psychological Institute at the University of Frankfort in Germany. she worked closely with Kurt Koffka, a Gestalt psychologist. Later she moved to the United States, where she worked at various universities and psychoanalytic institute such as the University of California, Berkeley and the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute.


Research

Buhler's research focused on the development of personality, the role of culture and society in shaping personality, and the use of psychological testing to assess personality traits. She also contributed to the development of humanistic psychology, which emphasizes personal growth, self-awareness, and self- actualization. [3]


Buhler was a pioneer in the use of projective tests, such as the Thematic Apperception Test, to understand personality. She also believed that psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches to therapy could be integrated.


Awards

Throughout her career, Buhler received numerous awards and honour, including the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Contributions to psychology in 1966. her work has had a significant impact on the field of psychology, particularly in the areas of personality assessment and humanistic psychology.
