Mesoplodon hotaula, bir mesoplodon türü.^[1]

Mesoplodon hotaula, genetik olarak M. ginkgodens türünden farklılığı ortaya konulana kadar Japon gagalı balinası olarak anılmaktaydı. Daha sonra yapılan bir çalışma sonucunda ayrı bir tür olarak ortaya konuldu.^[2]^[3] Bu tür ilk olarak 1965 yılında Sri Lanka'da Moore ve Gilmore tarafından karaya oturmuş bir örnek üzerinde çalışıldı, fakat hata yapılarak Japon gagalı balinası türü içerisinde incelendi.^[4] 2000'li yıllarda genetik ve DNA analizleri sonucunda ayrı bir tür olarak tanımlanarak literatüre girdi. 1963 yılında kayıtlara geçiren kişi olan^[5] Paules Edward Pieris Deraniyagala'nın isminden dolayı literatürde Deraniyagala gagalı balinası olarak da geçer.^[6]^[7]

Hint Okyanusu, Büyük Okyanus ile birlikte Seyşeller, Maldivler, Sri Lanka, Gilbert Adaları, Kiribati, Live Adaları kıyıları Mesoplodon hotaula'nın yaşadığı bölgelerdir.^[8]^[9]
