Janssen Madalyası, Fransız Bilimler Akademisi tarafından astrofizik alanında ilerleme kaydedenlere verilen bir ödüldür.[1]
Ödül 1886'da kuruldu, ancak ilk madalya bir yıl sonra verildi. Madalyanın ilk kazananını belirleyecek komisyon, spektroskopi bilimi üzerine çalışması üzerine Alman fizikçi Gustav Kirchhoff'u seçti. Ancak Kirchhoff, ödülün açıklanmasından birkaç ay önce 17 Ekim 1887'de 63 yaşında öldü. Komisyon, ödül için yeni bir alıcı seçmek yerine, Akademi'nin 26 Aralık 1887 tarihli oturumunda açılış madalyasının "bu büyük Heidelbergli aliminin anısına ve onuruna" mezarına konulacağını duyurdu.[2]
Ödül bienal olarak planlanmıştı, ancak 1888'de ve daha sonra 1889'da verildi. Comptes rendus de l'Académie des Sciences’ın 1889 cildindeki bir açıklama, ödülün ilk yedi yıl boyunca her yıl ve ardından 1894'ten itibaren iki yılda bir verileceğini açıklığa kavuşturdu.[3]
Bu ödül, Fransız Astronomi Topluluğu tarafından verilen yıllık bir ödül olan Jules Janssen Ödülü (1897'de yaratılmıştır) ile aynı değildir. Her iki ödül de Fransız gök bilimci Pierre Janssen'e (1824-1907) (daha çok Jules Janssen olarak bilinir) ithaf edildi. Janssen, Akademi ödülünü kurdu ve açılış komisyonunun bir üyesiydi.
