Wheatfield under thunderclouds (1890) This is one of Van Gogh's last paintings. After a visit to his brother Theo and his wife in Paris, Vincent wrote ca.10 July 1890: "...because I know very well what I wanted I have painted three big canvasses since. Enormous vast wheatfields under savage skies and I have consciously tried to express sadness, extreme loneliness. ...I know almost for sure that I have put to words what I cannot express in words: how healthy and heartening I experience the countryside." (Also see 'Wheatfield with crows'.) In his last weeks of his life Van Gogh was rather depressed. He worried about Theo's future financial situation and his own, he was afraid for a new attack of his disease and he felt he had failed as a painter - despite some recognition. Vincent shot himself in his chest on 27 July 1890 and died two days later with Theo by his side.
