Museums of Türkiye

Wiki Meets Museums of Türkiye Project, or in short Museums of Türkiye, is a product of cooperation between Museum Professionals Association (MUZEDER), British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) and Wikimedia Community User Group Turkey (WMTR) under GLAM-WIKI. The project started in April 2021 and it is still ongoing as a dynamic project.

In this project Museum Professionals Association, Wikimedia Community User Group Turkey and British Institute at Ankara cooperates to create a list of the museums in Turkey and the Wikidata and improve the visibility of the museums to increase their accessibility.

Definition of Museum and Museology[kaynağı değiştir]

According to the definition of ICOM in 2007 “A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment.”[1] Since 1946 ICOM has updated the “Definition of Museum” at different times. In the scope of such workshops conducted by the international committees of ICOM, the Workshop on Definition of Museums was held between 19-21 April 2018 in Nevşehir. [1][2]

Museology is the field of science that focuses on museums.

  • International Museum Day is celebrated on the 18th of May every year.[3]

Process of the Project[kaynağı değiştir]

1. Museums working under Ministry of Culture and Tourism General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums
1.1. Preparation of the data of the museums (including open air museums) and museum directories working under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums
1.2. Preparation of the data of the Painting and Sculpture Museums working under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism General Directorate of Fine Arts
1.3. Museums working under the Directorate General of Foundations
2. The preparation of the data of private museums
2.1. Certified private museums
2.2. Uncertified private museums

  • Certified or uncertified private museums are different organizations and foundations that our founded by private persons and work under different directories, which is why in the later steps of the project will focus on the classification of the private museums as in the examples of;
  • Municipality Museums
  • University Museums
  • Organizational/Foundational Museums
  • Personal Museums
  • Military Museums

In the scope of the project, a Wikimarathon is expected to be held in order to obtain more information regarding the museums of which the Wikidata elements have been formed.

1.1. Museums (Including Open Air Museums) Working Under the Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums[kaynağı değiştir]

  • The website regarding museums working under the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums is being updated. Within the scope of this project, the Wikidata query links are being created which will connect the data from the Wikidata and the museum information.

1.2. Museums Working under the General Directorate of Fine Arts[kaynağı değiştir]

There are three Painting and Sculpture Museums working under the The General Office of Fine Arts.

Also, MSGSU Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture is working under Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. As private museums are founded within or under different organizations and foundations of different categories, Painting and Sculpture Museums founded as private museums will be discussed specifically section regarding the private museums.

1.3. Museums working under the Directorate General of Foundations[kaynağı değiştir]

The website regarding museums working under Directorate General of Foundations is being updated. Within the scope of this project, the Wikidata query links are being created which will connect the information from the Wikidata and the museum information.

2. Private Museums[kaynağı değiştir]

Information regarding this section will be added in the future. In Turkey, there are private museums that need to get certification from Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums[3]. In this project, private museums Wikidata links will be matched with existing Wikidata links, if there is no Wikidata available it will be created.

3 March 2022 Event Announcement: In the scope of Wikipedia: GLAM/Museums of Turkey Project Wikipedia Education with Museums Curators Series 1 is a cooperative event of Museum Professionals Association (MUZEDER), British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) and Wikimedia Community User Group Turkey. The event will be held in English and it requires registration. The event was held online.
