Feminizmin tarihi, kadınlara eşit hakların sağlanmasını amaçlayan hareketlerin ve ideolojilerin kronolojik veya tematik anlatılarını içerir. Dünyanın dört bir yanındaki feministlerin sebepleri, hedefleri ve niyetleri, zamana, kültüre ve ülkeye bağlı olarak değişmiş olsa da çoğu Batılı feminist tarihçi, kadın haklarını elde etmek için çalışan tüm hareketlerin, feminizm terimini kendilerine uygulamamış olsalar da (ya da uygulamasalar) bile feminist hareket olarak değerlendirilmeleri [kimin tarafından?] gerektiğini iddia ediyorlar. Diğer bazı tarihçiler "feminist" terimini modern feminist hareket ve onun devamıyla sınırlandırır ve daha önceki hareketleri tanımlamak için "protofeminist" etiketini kullanır.

Modern Batı feminist tarihi, alışılmış analizde, her biri önceki ilerlemeye dayalı olarak biraz farklı amaçları olan üç zaman dilimine veya "dalgalara" bölünmüştür: [1] [2]

Feminist hareketin varlığından önce kadın eşitliğini tartışan veya ilerleten insanlar ve aktivistler bazen protofeminist olarak etiketlenir. Bazı akademisyenler bu terimi, daha önceki katkıların önemini azalttığına veya feminizmin protofeminist veya postfeminist gibi terimlerin ima ettiği gibi tek, doğrusal bir tarihe sahip olmadığına inandıkları için eleştirir. Yaklaşık 24 yüzyıl önce,[11] Platon, Elaine Hoffman Baruch'a göre, "kadınların en yüksek sınıfın üyeleri olduklarını savunarak tamamen siyasi ve cinsel eşitliğini savundu, bu sınıf ... yöneten ve savaşanlar" [12]

Bir Tamil Azize olan Andal, 7. veya 8. yüzyıl civarında yaşadı. [13] [14] Tiruppavai'yı yazmasıyla tanınır. [14] Andal, Goda Mandali gibi kadın gruplarına ilham verdi.
