Xenungulata ("garip toynaklılar"), Geç Paleosen'den Erken Eosen'e ( SALMA sınıflandırmasında Itaboraian'dan Casamayoran'a ) kadar yaşamış, soyu tükenmiş ve ilkel Güney Amerika toynaklı memelilerin bir takımıdır . Grubun fosilleri Brezilya, Arjantin, Peru, [6] ve Kolombiya'daki yataklardan bilinmektedir. Bu esrarengiz grubun en bilinen üyesi, yaşayan Afrika fillerine benzer bir yürüyüşe sahip tapir benzeri ve büyüklüğünde bir hayvan olan Carodnia cinsidir. [7]
Açıklama
[[Arctocyonidae|Arctocyonidlerle] ilişkili oldukları önerilmiş olsa da, bunların hiçbir kanıtı bulunamamıştır. Xenungulatlar'ın ayak kemikleri kısa ve sağlamdı; parmakları, diğer meridyenlerden oldukça farklı olarak, geniş, düz ve çatlaksız toynak benzeri pençeler ile biterdi.Xenungulatlar ayrıca, ilkel astrapotheres ile bazı diş benzerlikleri gösterir. Taksonomi
Cifelli 1983 grouped Carodnia with pyrotheres based on a similarity in astragalus morphology, but later concluded that this observation was incorrect.[9]
