Violeta Chamorro (doğum Violeta Barrios Torres; 18 Ekim 1929) Nikaragua doğumlu siyasetçi. 1990 ile 1997 yılları arasında Nikaragua Devlet Başkanı olarak görev yapmıştır. Nikaragua'da devlet başkanı olarak görev yapan ilk ve tek kadındır.[2]
İlk yılları
Güney Nikaragua'da toprak sahibi bir ailenin çocuğu olarak dünyaya gelen Chamorro, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nde eğitim gördü.[3][4] Memleketine geri döndüğünde evlendi ve bu evlilikten beş çocuğu oldu.[5][6] Kocası Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal, ailesinden daha sonra miras aldığı La Prensa gazetesinde çalışan bir gazeteciydi.[7][8][9]
Nikaragua Devrimi
Eşinin hükümet karşıtı tutumundan dolayı, sık sık hapse girdi veya sürgün edildi, Chamorro'yu on yıl yurt dışında yaşatmak zorunda kaldı.[10] Eşi Pedro Joaquín, 1978'de suikaste uğradı ve öldürüldü. Eşinin ölümünden sonra Chamorro, gazetenin yönetimini devraldı.[11] Pedro'nun öldürülmesi Nikaragua Devrimi'ne yol açtı ve dul eşi Chamorro tarafından kullanılan muhalefet güçleri için güçlü bir sembol haline geldi.[10] Başlarda Sandinista Ulusal Kurtuluş Cephesi'nden Anastasio Somoza Debayle seçimleri kazandığında devrimcilere destek verdi.[12][13][14]
Siyasi kariyeri
Ulusal Yeniden Yapılanma altında kurulan geçici hükümetin bir parçası olmayı kabul etti[12][8] (İspanyolca: Junta de Gobierno de Reconstrucción Nacional, JGRN); ancak, Yapılanma daha radikal bir yönde ilerlemeye başladı ve Sovyetler Birliği ile anlaşmalar imzaladığında Chamorro istifa ederek gazeteye geri döndü.[15] Chamorro'nun yönetiminde La Prensa gazetesi hükumetin izlediği siyaseti eleştirmeye başladı. Daniel Ortega yeni genel seçimlerin 1990'da yapılacağını duyurduğunda Chamorro, Ulusal Muhalefet Birliği (İspanyolca: Unión Nacional Opositora, UNO) olarak bilinen muhalefet partisine aday olarak seçildi ve partiye katıldı. Toplamda 14 parti ittifakı kuruldu.[16][17][18]
Bu partiler muhafazakârlardan ve liberallerden, komünistlere kadar değişiyordu ve idealist farklılıklar nedeniyle herhangi bir siyasi yol izlemekte güçlük çekiyordu.[19] Görevdeki Cumhurbaşkanı Ortega'nın kazandığına dair düzenlenen anketlere rağmen,[20][21] Chamorro 25 Şubat 1990'da seçimleri kazandı ve Amerika Kıtası'nda ilk seçilen kadın devlet başkanı oldu.[22][23][24] Chamorro 25 Nisan 1990'da göreve başladı.[25] Chamorro'nun liderliği, ekonomik sorunlar ve toplumsal huzursuzluk ile dolu altı yılı kapsamaktaydı.[26][27][28][29] 10 Ocak 1997'de görevinden ayrıldıktan sonra Chamorro'nun sağlığının kötüye gitmesi siyasi kariyerinden emekli olmaya zorladı.
