Muraena helena veya Müren balığı, Muraena cinsine bağlı bir balık türüdür.[3] Doğu Atlantik ve Akdeniz'de bulunur.

Özellikleri[değiştir | kaynağı değiştir]

Uzun ve yılan balığı şeklinde vücuda sahiptir.[4] Pulsuz, tüysüz ve pürüzsüzdür.[5] Yaklaşık 80-130 cm (31-51 in) uzunluğunda olsa da 1,5 metre (4 ft 11 in) uzunluğunda yakalanan örneği vardır.[6][7]. Bilinen en ağırı 6,5 kg (14 lb), en yaşlısı ise 38 yaşındadır.[8] Ortalama ömrü 12-15'dir.[8][9]

Yaygın bilinenin aksine ısırığı zehirli değildir. Ancak zararsız da değildir. Mukusu veya tükürüğü ikincil enfeksiyonlara sebep olabilir.[5] Tükürüğünde Pseudomonas ve Vibrio cinsi bakteriler bulunur. Isırık tedavisinin yanı sıra bu bakteri türlerine yönelik tedavilerin uygulanması da yararlı olabilir.[10]
