John Winthrop (12 Ocak 1587/88 - 26 Mart 1649) 1630’da, Kral I. Charles’tan koloni kurma imtiyazı almış bulunan yeni bir göçmen dalgası Massachusetts Körfezi Kolonisi'ni kuran Püritenlerin lideri olan İngiliz avukattı.[1] John Winthrop'ın Yeni Dünya’da "tepenin üzerindeki kent" yaratmaya amacı, Amerikan kültürünü derinden etkileyen bir vizyondu.[1][2]
Winthrop, zengin bir toprak sahibi ve tüccar ailede doğdu.[2] Hukuk eğitimi aldı ve Suffolk'taki Groton'da Malikanenin Efendisi oldu. 1628'de Winthrop ve onun Püriten meslektaşlarının Massachusetts Körfez Kolonisi'ni kuran imtiyaz belgelerini beraberlerinde getirilmesiyle beraber koloninin yönetimi İngiltere’de değil Massachusetts’te yerleşik oluyordu.[2]
1629 ile 1649'daki ölümü arasında, Massachusetts Yüksek Kurulu tarafından Vali olarak seçilen Winthrop, bu dönemde muhafazakar Thomas Dudley ve daha liberal Roger Williams ve Henry Vane ile çatısmasıyla tanınır.[2]
