John Milton Cage Jr. (5 Eylül 1912 - 12 Ağustos 1992) ABD'li besteci, filozof, yazar ve baskıcı (printmaker).

Los Angeles'da doğan Cage, liseyi sınıf birincisi olarak bitirdi. 1938 yılında Seattle'da vurmalı çalgılar orkestrası kurdu. Aynı yıl değişik bir piyanoyu konserlerinde kullanmaya başladı. Cage, bu ilginç piyanonun tellerini birbirine bağlayıp, aralarına; lastik, tokmak, tahta gibi değişik cisimler yerleştirerek, geleneksel tınısından farklı sesler yakaladı.

İlk yapıtına "Landscape No: 5" adını verdi. 42 plaktan çıkan sesleri önce bir manyetik teyp bandı üzerine kaydetti, sonra bunu kesti, değiştirdi ve tekrar birleştirdi. 29 Ağustos 1952 tarihinde üç akımı bir tek nota çalmadan canlandıran 4'33" (dört dakika otuz üç saniye) adlı bestesiyle sessizliğin, müziğin bir öğesi olduğu mesajını vermek istediğini söylemiştir.[1] Cage, bu besteyi yapmasına neden olan en önemli etkenin, yakın arkadaşı ressam Robert Rauschenberg olduğunu söylemiştir[2]. 1951'de Rauschenberg, "Beyaz Boyamalar" adını verdiği bir seri tabloyu yapar. Tümüyle beyaz boyalı 7 parçadan oluşan bu yapıt, besteciye esin kaynağı olmuştur.

2002 yılında Mike Batt, "Bir Dakika Sessizlik" (A Minute's Silence) adını verdiği bir beste yaptı. Bu da Cage'in bestesi gibiydi fakat, sessizlik süresi 1 dakikaydı.
