Mabel Normand, (9 Kasım 1893 - 23 Şubat 1930) Amerikalı oyuncu ve yönetmendir. Sessiz film döneminin en ünlü ve en sevilen oyuncularından biri olan Normand'ın hayatı, kariyerinin son dönemleri boyunca yönetmen William Desmond Taylor'un ölümü de dahil olmak üzere çeşitli skandallarla gölgelenmiştir.

Yaşamı

Mabel Ethelreid Normand adıyla New Brighton, Staten Island, New York'ta üç kardeşin en küçüğü olarak doğan Mabel Normand, korkunç bir yoksulluk içinde büyüdü. Babası düzenli bir iş sahibi olmayan bir marangozdu ve zaman zaman limanda denizciler için çalışırdı. Mabel, 1909'da 16 yaşındayken başladığı film kariyeri öncesinde sanatçılar için poz veren bir modeldi. Kartpostallar yapan Charles Dana Gibson da bu sanatçılardan biridir. Yapımcı ve yönetmen Mack Sennett ile tanışmasının ardından ikili arasında inişli çıkışlı bir aşk ilişkisi başladı.

Mabel ilk filmlerinde daha çok filmin estetik yönünü zenginleştirmek için kullanılan hoş bir genç bir kız portresi çizerken kısa bir süre içinde komedi filmleri için ne denli yetenekli olduğunu gösterecek ve Sennet'in kısa komedi filmlerindeki yıldızlarından biri haline gelecekti. Charlie Chaplin ve Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle ile birlikte pek çok film yapmış, özellikle de erken dönem Chaplin filmlerinde senaryo yazarı, yönetmen ve oyuncu olarak çalışmıştır. Chaplin ve Arbuckle ile çalışmaya başlamadan önce de uzun filmler yönetmiş olan Mabel, döneminin sessiz sinema dünyasının en tanınan ve seyirci tarafından en çok sevilen kadın komedyeni olmuş, hatta The Queen of Comedy ve The Female Chaplin olarak anılmıştır.[1]

Aynı zamanda 1913 yapımı A Noise From The Deep filminde Arbuckle'nin suratına pasta fırlatan komedyen olarak, sonradan çok tutulacak olan bu numarayı beyaz perdeye taşıyan ilk kişidir.

1914 yılında Charlie Chaplin ve Marie Dressler ile birlikte rol aldığı Tillie's Punctured Romance adlı film ile baş rol oyunculuğuna yükseldi. Bu dönemde Mack Sennett ile olan ilişkisinin sonuna gelen Mabel, onunla olan film çalışmalarına da nokta koydu ve 1918'de Samuel Goldwyn ile anlaşıp haftalığı 3.500$'a (2007 değerlerine göre haftalığı 53,000$) bir kontrat imzalayıp Kaliforniya'da kendi film stüdyosunu kurmaya girişti. Gooldwyn ile bir ilişki yaşayan Mabel' ın bu sıralarda ondan hamile kaldığı fakat çocuğun ölü doğduğu sanılmaktadır.[1] İleride sağlığını ve kariyerini çok kötü etkileyecek olan uyuşturucu bağımlılığı ve alkol sorunlarının bu dönemde başladığı söylenmektedir.[2] Yine de Mack Sennett'le olan ilişkisinin bitmesi Mabel'ın kendini değerlendirme sürecine girmesini sağlamış ve bu dönemde kendini geliştirme yolunda kitaplara ve çeşitli okumalara yönelmiştir.

Yönetmen William Desmond Taylor da onun kitaplara olan bu ilgisini paylaştığından ikili arasında yakın bir arkadaşlık başlamıştı. Taylor uyuşturucu ve özel hayatındaki sorunlar nedeniyle zor günler geçiren Normand için çok endişeliydi ve ona destek olmaya çalıştı. Fakat Taylor, 1922 yılında Mabel' ın onun evinden ayrılmasından yalnızca birkaç dakika sonra öldürülünce Mabel da süpheliler listesine girdi. Katil hiçbir zaman bulunamamış olsa da polis Mabel'dan hiçbir zaman ciddi bir şekilde şüphelenmemişti.[3] Yine de Mabel Normand sıkı bir şekilde sorgulandı.

Mabel Normand'ın kariyeri Taylor'un ölümünden sonra inişe geçti. Süren soruşturmalar, Mabel'ın duygusal gel-gitleri ve uyuşturucu problemleri de bu dönemde pek fazla çalışmasına olanak vermedi.

Taylor'un ölümünden yalnızca iki yıl sonra Mabel kendini yeni bir skandalın ortasında buldu. Mabel'ın eski bir suçlu olan şoförü Joe Kelly, bir yemek daveti esnasında Mabel'ın sevgilisi Courtland Dines' ı silahıyla yaraladı. Taylor olayının ardından gelen bu ikinci olay, maalesef Mabel Normand'ın ününe iyice gölge düşürdü. Öyle ki bu durum Mabel Normand'ın filmleriin bazı eyaletlerde yasaklanmasına, bazılarında ise boykot edilmesine kadar vardı.

1926 yılında Raggedy Rose filmi ile yeniden çalışmaya başladı. Bunun ardından gelen dört filminin tanıtımında arkadaşı Mary Pickford'un da içinde olduğu Hoolywood'daki bir grup insanın büyük desteğini görse de hiçbir zaman eskisi kadar yukarılara tırmanamadı.

Yine 1926 yılında aktör Lew Cody ile evlendi. Cody onun yanına taşıncaya dek Beverly Hills'te yakın mesafede bulunan evlerinde ayrı yaşadılar. Bununla birlikte Mabel'ın sağlığı bir çöküş sürecine girmişti. Uzun süre sanatoryumda tedavi görmesine rağmen 22 Şubat 1930 yılında tüberküloz nedeniyle henüz 35 yaşındayken Monrovia, Kaliforniya'da öldü.
