Pigface, Ministry'nin The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste turunun bir yan ürünü olarak doğmuştur.[1] Tur için Al Jourgensen; Atkins, Nivek Ogre ve Chris Connelly'yi getirmiştir. Ayrıca turda o dönemki Ministry bateristi olan Rieflin de bulunmaktaydı. Atkins ikinci bir baterist ile çalmakla hoşlanırken, üyelerin bir nevi "Ministry cover grubu" olmaktan daha da öteye gidebileceğini hissetmiştir. Tur bittiğinde Atkins ve Rieflin The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste turundaki bazı diğer müzisyenlerle birlikte çalışmaya devam etme kararı almış, Pigface deneysel ve açık görüşlü birçok müzisyen ile çalışma niyeti ile ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu müzisyenlerin çoğu, önemli endüstriyel müzik plak şirketi olan Wax Trax!'dan eserler vermiştir.
Trent Reznor da Nine Inch Nails ünlü olmadan ve grubun işlerine ev sahipliği yapmadan önce grubun bir üyesi olmuştur. Reznor'un diğer grup üyeleriyle birlikte yazdığı ve kendisinin söylediği "Suck", bir underground hit'i olmuştur. Reznor daha sonra şarkıyı Broken adlı EP'si için yeniden kaydetmiştir.
Rieflin sonunda Pigface'den ayrılmış ve Atkins'i görev başında bırakmıştır. Grubun kayıt yapmak ve konser vermek için yüzlerce müzisyen ile işbirliği içinde olması, grubun tüm albümleri be tüm şarkılarının eşsiz olmasını sağlamıştır. Mamafih, bu durum albümler arası devamsızlık nedeni ile bazı olumsuz eleştirileri de beraberinde getirmiştir.
2009 yılında Detroit kökenli bir plak şirketi olan Full Effect Records, Pigface'in kendileri ile anlaştığını açıklamıştır.[2] Pigface'in yeni albümü 6 bundan kısa bir süre sonra yayımlanmıştır.
