Old Black Joe, Stephen Foster tarafından salon şarkısı olarak yazıldı ve Firth, Gölet & Co tarafındandan 1853 New York'ta yayınlandı.
Emerson şarkının "yumuşak melankoli" ve zor tona", geleneksel Afro-Amerikan maneviyatına en yakın olduğuna inanmaktadır. Harold Vincent Milligan şarkıyı tam olarak " Etiyopya şarkılarının en iyilerinden biri... Ruhu acı olmadan üzüntülü nazik melankolilerden biridir. Müzikte dalgın bir hassasiyet vardır." şeklinde anlatır.
